Tired, Christian Krohg, 1885
Tired, Christian Krohg, 1885

There are certain moments in the day when every care falls away and you feel a softening of your outlook accompanied by limp weariness. So you sit down and do nothing but let thoughts float in and out of your consciousness. You watch silent things like sunlight and sleeping cats. I’ve been thinking about silence lately. I believe it is more a state of being than it is a lack of noise.

This painting comes from an artist who belonged to a group of Scandinavian artists called The Skagen Painters. I just discovered them. My first look through their work impresses me with the strong character in each painting. These are paintings of a people and their land. It couldn’t be just anyone or any place. And yet in these paintings I find strength that is universal. Even this tired girl has the implied strength of doing housework until it leaves her happy and weary.
